Hire Police for a Special Event
Special Duty refers to the hiring of an off-duty police officer(s) for security, traffic control, or escorts within the City of Columbus.

Special Duty jobs are filled on a voluntary basis. The Special Duty Office cannot guarantee job requests will be filled.
Hourly Rates Effective December 9, 2022

* Minimum charge: Three (3) hours pay per officer.
** The charge for a Sergeant or above is only assessed for events that necessitate the use of 3 or more officers.
Job Cancellation Policy
All job cancellations must be made directly with the assigned officer at least two (2) hours prior to the start of the job. If you do not cancel the officer(s) in sufficient time, you will be charged a three (3) hour show-up fee for each officer.
Approval of a request to hire off-duty police officers is at the sole discretion of the Columbus Division of Police. To ensure the safety and security of both the public and our officers, each job request is reviewed for sufficient staffing, and we may make recommendations. We also reserve the right to decline job requests that may be deemed inappropriate or unsafe for police officers.
Additionally, while working a special duty assignment, an officer may be required to take police action (e.g. makes an arrest). If this police action is directly related to the special duty employment and if, to properly process and/or complete the police action the officer must perform work beyond the scheduled ending time of the of the assignment, the special duty employer is responsible for payment of the officer’s time needed to complete the processing of the police action.
