About the City Auditor

Megan N. Kilgore

Megan Kilgore is the Auditor for the City of Columbus. She is the first woman to ever hold the position for the nation’s 14th most populous city.

Since 2018, Kilgore has overseen seven departments tasked with: the collection of revenues, including $1.2 billion annually in income tax; maintaining the City’s $5 billion debt portfolio; carrying out all debt issuance and investor relations; overseeing the City’s $2.5 billion investment portfolio; managing citywide accounting and operations; producing the award-winning Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and other financial reports; and providing payroll services for 10,000 employees. Notable accomplishments of the office include:

  • Columbus is the largest city in the country to maintain AAA/Aaa/AAA credit ratings from S&P Global, Moody’s Ratings, and Fitch Ratings, respectively
  • Columbus is the fastest large city in the country to release its annual ACFR (Merritt Research Services)
  • In four years, the Office successfully implemented three technology systems, two of which replaced +35 year old systems: a citywide payroll and time & attendance system; Microsoft D365 for citywide finance and operations; and a new, state-of- the-art revenue system

Prior to elected office, Kilgore was a municipal advisor. Kilgore’s practice concentrated on providing advisory service to cities, counties, utilities, school districts, and economic development districts.

A fierce advocate for social and economic equity, Kilgore is the first LGBTQ woman to ever be elected to the Columbus executive branch and has received numerous awards for her leadership in using economic policies to advance the public good. She also shares her expertise as an adjunct lecturer at her alma mater, the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University, where she teaches a course in public finance.

Kilgore is a frequent speaker at public sector, technology, and finance conferences around the country. She is a founder of Ohio Women in Public Finance and a recipient of the 2023 Northeast Women in Public Finance Freda Johnson Award, The Bond Buyer’s Rising Star Award, a Women for Economic Leadership and Development (WELD) Women You Should Know Honoree, and a recipient of the Women in Public Finance’s Rising Star Award.

Kilgore earned a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University and a master’s degree in public administration (MPA) from Northwestern University.
