Mission

Inspector General Seal BlueThe City of Columbus Department of the Inspector General's mission is to promote trust and transparency for the community and within the Columbus Division of Police. The Department of the Inspector General is committed to thoroughly and impartially investigating allegations of misconduct and excessive use of force by sworn personnel within the Columbus Division of Police. When evidence suggests, recommendations of accountability will be made in order to restore, build, and maintain public trust in the Columbus Division of Police.


Vision

To be deemed as the model agency for police oversight and accountability nationally and to ensure the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and leadership are displayed within the Columbus Division of Police as they serve and interact with the citizens of Columbus.


Jurisdiction

The City of Columbus Department of the Inspector General is responsible for conducting administrative investigations regarding allegations of police misconduct and excessive use of force by sworn personnel within the Columbus Division of Police. The Department does not have jurisdiction or authority to examine, investigate, or make recommendations concerning elected officials, civilian city employees, or any other law enforcement agencies other than the Columbus Division of Police.


History

On February 1, 2022, the City of Columbus Civilian Police Review Board and the mayor approved the appointment of Jacqueline Hendricks as the city's first Inspector General. In this historic role as Columbus's first Inspector General, IG Hendricks and her staff will investigate allegations of police misconduct and excessive use of force by the sworn employees of the Columbus Division of Police.

Inspector General Jacqueline Hendricks’ law enforcement career began in April 1986, when she entered the Detroit Metropolitan Police Academy. After graduation, she was assigned as a police officer to the Fifth Precinct, Patrol Operations.
