City Announces Nearly $21 Million in Summer Programming

Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther and Council President Shannon G. Hardin today announced $20.8 million in city funding for summer programming for Columbus youth.

“Our children have been through so much these last few years – coming out of the pandemic and adjusting to a changed society – and it is vital that they see themselves in our city’s future,” said Mayor Ginther. “By providing them with structure and stability, and helping them to develop new skills, we are building a brighter tomorrow for teens and kiddos across Columbus while ensuring the kind of growth that is both dynamic and inclusive.”

Of the $20.8 million in funding, $8.6 million is being awarded to 90 community organizations that submitted funding requests as part of an open, competitive application process held from February 21 - March 20. Funding proposals were then evaluated by an interdepartmental review committee comprised of representatives from both the administration and Columbus City Council, which ultimately devised the recommended allocations.

Programs receiving financial support promote academic achievement, career readiness skills and non-violent conflict resolution, all of which empower youth to learn, grow and develop during the summer months and beyond. Ordinances authorizing the $8.6 million in city funding will be considered by Columbus City Council at the April 29 meeting.

“A safer community and a stronger workforce begins with keeping our young people on track over the summer,” said Council President Hardin. “The programs we’re funding this year provide opportunities for kids in every neighborhood to learn, grow and build community, whether through athletics, STEM exposure, job training, enrichment camps and so much more.”

These investments will join an additional $12.2 million that has already been approved for a number of city-sponsored summer programs, including police and fire cadet classes, the Columbus Recreation and Parks APPS Job Readiness Program, summer camps, youth sports and ongoing partnerships with several community organizations.
